Films

At Couch Flag Productions, we strongly believe in the artistic value of each of our films. You won’t see our logo popping up on any paying gig.

Whether it’s a story we’re passionate about or an emerging filmmaker we want to get behind, each of our films contributes to the ethos of Couch Flag.

Three citizens of Alton, Illinois, reckon with the legacy and impact of a tragic historical site with roots in their city. Meanwhile, a medium from out of town visits the site to see what she can learn from the energy of the land.

Directed by Couch Flag Productions owner Josh Matejka, Smallpox Island is our flagship production (no pun intended.) Featuring award-winning cinematography and editing, the film’s attempt to reckon with a haunted past speaks to the Couch Flag mission of confronting the truth, even when the truth is buried.

A reflection on American violence.

Co-written and co-directed by sister-brother filmmaking team Brooke and Josh Matejka, Disposed to Suffer is an exercise in formalism and cinematic brutalism. Compiled entirely from footage pulled from public domain archives, the film’s strong point of view confronts the legacy and memory of American violence.

A Mexican-American family adjusts to multi-generational living after their abuela moves into the home. Through work, play, and food, they connect with their family’s tradition while writing a new chapter in their shared history.

Directed by Josh Matejka, Frijoles made its debut at the 34th Annual Whitaker St. Louis International Film Festival in November 2025.
